Artist's Description

This is a Devil's Claw seed pods, called Ihug in the O'odham language (Proboscidea parviflora). O'odham people domesticated wild devil's claw to create a plant with very long seed pods. The longer seed pods provide weavers with longer strips of black for their basket designs. You will also see devil's claw woven into the baskets of other Southwestern Native peoples, such as the Apache. O'odham gardeners grow domesticated devil's claw, selling the seed pods in round bundles called Devils Claw Hats.
